Can't set up a new viewer for archives

Post by Alan »

Often I find zip or rar archives of images, eg comic books. To view them I could unzip and use any image viewer (like ACDSee) , but I've found a very nice (free) app, "CDisplay Comic Reader" (http://www.geocities.com/davidayton/CDisplay) which can open and display archives or images as a slideshow without having to explicitly expand the container file (obviously, it does expand it to a temporary location, but I don't have to worry about that). So I'd like to train FAR to "view" these files with CDisplay.

Conventionally these image archives are given the extension cbr or cbz (for rar or zip file). So I renamed my archives accordingly. Then I use FAR's file association for .cbr to create an action for "view", F3:
P:\CDisplay\CDisplay.exe "!.!"
However, pressing F3 still brings up FAR's ASCII view of the file.
So I tried putting the command as "Execute"/Ctrl-PgDn, "View"/Alt-F3. Far still ignores this and acts as if the files were normal rar or zip files.

Apparently FAR is looking inside the files and ignoring the extensions. Is there any way to make it use CDisplay?

I hope you wrote *.cbr, and not just .cbr in the file association dialog.

Yes, I did; I've made a few FAR associations that work.
See attached. (Incidentally, is the colour of text normal? Some modes, like this, have very low contrast text.)
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

You need to have a comma "," between the masks, *.cbr,*.cbz not a space.

About the low contrast text thing, I can barely see anything until I
put the cursor in the line and then move the cursor.
You might want to make your own unchanged/disabled text color
to something readable.

Under the color options check these:
Dialog -> Unchanged text input
Dialog -> Disabled input line
Dialog -> Combobox -> Disabled item
Warning message -> Unchanged text input
Warning message -> Disabled input line
Warning message -> Combobox -> Disabled item
Menu -> Disabled text

I think I got 'em all.

Thanks; I have been messing with the colours, though it's rather involved.

The odd thing is that I used exactly the same scheme (basically the default) as I used on Win98 on the same hardware; but that was perfectly legible. Obviously the video drivers and other system settings (Gamma?) play a part.

For a laugh I tried some of the schemes in the Addons\Colors directory. First I ran export_colors.bat to save my setup, then went through just about all the supplied schemes. None caught my fancy. (After all, I started with Norton Commander about 15 years ago, which Far's basic skin emulates, so I'm very comfortable with that.) But when I ran import_colors.bat it didn't completely restore the colour settings. Notably various filetypes, (eg images, sound) had weird colours and backgrounds, so I had to change these back individually.

Oh man. I was thinking of trying what you did with the batch files, too.
Now I'm not sure I wanna try. :-)

If I try it maybe I'll manually save and restore the colors the long way.
