File associations in Vista

Post by mant »

First of all, thanks for a great product. I've been using Far for a long, long time, and I'm a registered user. It's the FIRST program I install on any new PC.

So I have very reluctantly "up"graded to Vista. Bleh. Anyway, I'm having a problem with Far (1.70 build 2087) executing the correct program when I press ENTER on a file. For instance, if "index.htm" is selected in the active panel and I press ENTER, I get the following message:

No application is associated with the specified file for this operation
Cannot execute
c:\index.htm

If I use Windows file explorer, select the same file and press ENTER, it brings up my browser, as it should.

I've gone to Options / System Settings, and made sure "Use Windows Registered Types" is checked.

I did find a workaround - Commands / File Associations:

*.htm,*.html
"c:\program files\opera\opera.exe" "!\!.!"

This works, but I don't really want to have to do this for every single file type.

I have a feeling Vista changed the way file extensions are stored in the registry. Used to be simple (KHCR\filetype\shell\open\command) but now there's a lot more junk in there.

Is there a better workaround than what I came up with above?

Thanks!
